Children’s Leadership Education In Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Program (LEND) Receives Grant To Specialize In Autism
For Immediate Release: October 2, 2008
Washington, DC— The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awarded The District of Columbia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) Program at Children’s National Medical Center an expansion grant of $200,000 per year through 2011 to teach and prepare future leaders in the interdisciplinary treatment of autism and related developmental disabilities. Children’s DC LEND program is the region’s only recipient of this expansion grant.
“The Children’s National LEND program is committed to improving the care of children with autism spectrum disorders,” said Gaetano Lotrecchiano, PhD, program director of the DC LEND program at Children’s National. “This grant allows us to expand our focus to provide more education on autism, hone in on autism specialization for professionals, and accept more trainees into the program.”
DC LEND is an interdisciplinary training program for professionals in disciplines such as pediatrics, nursing, public health, social work, nutrition, speech-language pathology, audiology, pediatric dentistry, psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, health administration, genetics and parents of children with disabilities. Trainees learn to work as an interdisciplinary team to better address the needs of children with disabilities and their families.
Children’s National Medical Center’s DC LEND program collaborates with the George Washington University, Georgetown University, the Catholic University of America, and Howard University and has relationships with District of Columbia area healthcare facilities, local government offices, regional universities and institutes dedicated to servicing children with disabilities.
